'The Cokeville Miracle' a story of faith that is designed

Although well-made and intentioned, The Cokeville Miracle obviously wants to push the miraculous aspects of a hostage situation that occurred in Cokeville, Wyoming, in 1986  hence the name. But to do so requires a massaging of the facts.

And although faith is the subject at hand, for the first hour of the movie the hostage situation is the focus. It may also be the dullest hostage crisis on celluloid, as the criminal proceedings are almost boring. But they are necessary to bolster the miraculous aspect of the resolution, which may come as a surprise to those unfamiliar with the actual event.

In May of 1986, The Cokeville Elementary School in Cokeville, Wyoming, was the location of a frightening, and to some, miraculous series of events. Ex-town marshal David Young and his wife Doris took some 136 children and 18 adults hostage with a gasoline-filled homemade bomb. After cramming them all into a single classroom, David attached the bombs ignition switch to his wrist via shoelace, and demanded $2 million a child from the authorities and a personal phone call from then-President Ronald Reagan.

However, after a two-and-a-half hour standoff, David attached the bomb's detonation device to his wife's wrist while he left to use the rest room. At some point she lifted her arm sharply and the bomb went off prematurely, injuring her. David quickly returned to the chaotic scene, with children and adults all making a break for it during the confusion. David shot and injured one of the escaping teachers (who later recovered), and then shot and killed his injured wife before fatally turning the gun on himself. All of the hostages escaped, though a majority were hospitalized with burns and other injuries.

Once the crisis is over, the films case for The Miracle begins, with a full third of the movie basically arguing for Gods presence. I would argue that God was a good two and half hours late and none of this really had to happen; but as only the bad guys were killed, no one cares. The children soon report that angels  spirits of long-dead ancestors  were in the room, sheltering them from the blast and leading them to safety.

But a look into the details of the case expose that many of the facts revealed to bolster the faith-based claim are iffy. Surely the bomb should have killed everyone in the room, except that it failed to function properly. David used an untested gallon milk jug he picked up at a dump to hold the gasoline, and as most things at a junk yard, it was faulty; it had a slow leak. Even when he discovers the leak, he doesnt bother to try and fix it, even though being so smart he no doubt knows it will weaken the bombs blast.

Additionally, police report that only one of five blasting caps worked. Believers say God cut the wires to further lessen the blast. But isnt it possible that these wires were crimped accidentally during the bombs assembly or transportation, being bounced around as it was in the back of the Youngs van? Or maybe David wasnt quite the genius the movie plays him up to be, and just built it badly and accidentally cut them himself? Various news services record differing numbers of hostages, with the movie using a completely different number.

More facts get muddy, as David also piled bullets onto his bomb to create a barrage of shrapnel, and the movie claims that these hurt no one. But they certainly injured people, as multiple kids were treated for bullet wounds and grazes, just thankfully none of them life threatening.

Even recognition for a good idea is given to the supernatural. After kids actually begin tormenting their crazed hostage taker, a quick-thinking teacher puts masking tape on the ground around David Young, telling the kids its his Magic Square and theyre all playing a game  stay away from David (stop bothering the guy with the gun!) and stay out of the square (and put distance between yourself and the bomb!) and you win the game. This brilliant idea by the teacher is described as being a prompting by the spirit who knew the bomb was going to go off.

There are many facts questionably presented in the film, but that wont matter to most. The Cokeville Miracle was indeed fortuitous, and for those so inclined, Gods hand was no doubt resting on every childs head and nut cases detonation switch. But the supposed miracle is another in a series of events filled with soft facts that only affirm what people already believe, especially when you have to misrepresent facts that support your miracle.
