The Cokeville Miracle comes out in 3 days. Should you go se it?
Essentially what it is at its heart is a church movie. I recently watched Treasure in Heaven the John Tanner story, and something about it was very familiar. The style, the cinematography the message was all very T.C. Christensen ( he directed)If you want a small taste of what the movie is like I recommend watching that first to know what you are in for.
I think LDS audiences will enjoy this film, and Christian audiences too. The director and producers went to great lengths to remove all Mormon references to the story and town and what is left is a good Christian film. I suspect this will do well in the Christian dvd market considering I saw over 500,000 views on the trailer just a week ago.
This is probably Christensen's best movie to date. The acting was solid and the story arc was more traditional than his latest films. Audiences should like that. Based on fact however leaves a very simple story line of a small town cop who is desensitized by the violence of his work and he comes home at night and stops saying family prayer with his kids. His wife sees this and has a very hard time with it. We see how the challenges and events that follow with the hostages in school and his faith go hand in hand. For those of you not familiar with the events on that day, there was a former officer, David young, who was fired from his job in Cokeville and ready for reincarnation and he was planning on taking the school full of kids with him on his journey to a new life. Basically hold the school kids hostage and then blow them up. Well the bomb did actually go off, but this is where it gets interesting. I won't spoil the movie here, but it is easy to find old newspaper archives that talk about the events that day. Yes this movie is suspenseful. Nathan Stevens really nailed the part of David Young and besides Wade, gives one of the best performances of the film. Jasen Wade plays as Ron Harley, the cop.
The kid actors were good, better than you would normally expect to see in an indie film, but they all have solid performances.
I will say, for a movie about a bomb going off in a room full of children, there isn't much to see in the VFX. The flame and explosion look like they were done in after effects and takes away from what otherwise was a great movie.
